Due to self-isolation and boredom, this week I decided to tackle a chore that I had put off for many months, which you can clearly tell by the title of this blog. Clearing out your wardrobe may not be the most fun activity, but the satisfaction afterwards is well worth it. So here are my tips for making the process easier and I may even share a few sneak peaks into my very own tiny wardrobe.
1. Clear out your wardrobe
Before you can even begin organising, the first thing you should do is remove all of your clothes and belongings and dump the pile on your bed. This may be slightly alarming, as in doing you are actually creating more mess, but remember this is a necessary step in sorting out your closet.
2. Spring clean
As everything lays piled in a heap on your bed, do not be frightened by the monster that faces you; this is actually an opportunity to throw away a few things that have been taking up space that you didn’t even realise you still had. When I decided what to get rid of, I personally liked to consider what I had stopped wearing in the last year and what no longer fitted. However, it is also important to keep a few items that hold sentimental meaning whatever they may be. For instance, at the far corner of my wardrobe lives my prom dress which is now two years old but still holds memories.
3. Wipe down your draws
Before you begin to load everything back in you should give your draws a wipe and hoover the floor. There is no point going to the effort of nicely folding all your t shirts and jeans only to put them back in dusty draws. This step is relatively simple and literally only took me two minutes.
4. Roll your clothes
Since watching an episode of Marie Kondo show on Netflix, I decided to give this a try and discovered it actually saved me a lot of space, which was much appreciated in my shoebox of a wardrobe. This also allowed me to see each t shirt in my collection (which trust me was big) and stopped me making a mess later in the week when looking for a particular print.
5. Find a section for each category
No matter how big or small the space is where you keep your clothes it really helps to have a set place for everything, so you don’t go on a rampage and freak out, throwing things everywhere to find your one favourite pair of pjs only to discover they are in the wash. So pick a draw or half a draw even to store underwear, pjs, t shirts and bottoms.
6. Organising the rail
When coming to the hardest part of organising my rail I decided to put each hanging item by the warmth it provided effectively going from winter coats to summer dresses. This made sure I knew where everything was and worked out well for me, as half the time I live in hoodies and my teddy jacket anyway. However, this is not the only way to organise your wardrobe so try it out and see what works well for you; some people even go as far to colour organise but I do not wear enough colours or have the patience for that.
