My Top Four Staple Pieces

Updated: Apr 10, 2020

Living as a student can be tough, especially when faced with a limited self-control and a small budget. This is why I have learnt to invest in staple pieces that constantly move in and out of my barely functioning wardrobe. Being the shopaholic that I am, over the years I have spent endless hours on online shopping sites, scrolling through the latest designs, which they claim to be ‘the new must have item’; however, these so called ‘trends’ seem to last as long as they take to ship.

The need to keep on top of the current looks can be hard, and is made worse by the constant bombarding of social media fashion posts and sponsored ads, tempting you to invest in clothes that end up in stacks, untouched in a disorganised wardrobe. Investing in these staple pieces may be expensive at first but as I have learnt in the long run they will last longer and constantly be a shoe in to go with any outfit.

1. The holy grail of jackets, the denim jacket

This item is the perfect accessory to any outfit, pair it either with shorts and a crop tee in summer or layer it up with jumpers and scarves underneath for the winter months. I purchased mine from Princess Polly, as I loved the oversized look; however, you can pick one up from practically anywhere, as they have become an iconic image. Over the years I have found that a denim jacket is essential, due to its adaptability to go with any colour and you can even match it with a pair of jeans to truly rock the double denim look.

2. Hiker boots

I hate to be a cliché but ever since the trend of these boots came in, I knew I had to get my hands on a pair. The ones pictured above I got from Matalan, surprisingly, and I have not stopped reaching for them in my wardrobe. Pair with a basic pair of jeans and a baggy sweater for a grunge look or with a cute dress, to give your outfit a bit of edge. These black boots again go with anything like the denim jacket and you can also try them out in a different colour to make an outfit pop.

3. Teddy coat

Having a fluffy, soft teddy coat can be just what you need in the cold winter months to keep out the frostbite. A few years ago, when the first teddy coat was first introduced, the internet soon after exploded with various different colours and lengths. Browsing online, I came across this teddy from Misguided, which with the different colour sleeves is a great way of putting a new spin on an old trend and making yourself stand out wherever you go.

4. Tracksuit bottoms

Contrary to popular belief, I think that lounge wear is just as important as having nice clothes in your drawers, as let’s face it half the time you will be slugging around the house or in bed in some form of this attire. These tracksuit bottoms from Pretty Little Thing are heavenly, with the soft fleecing inside and the perfect shade of grey on the outside I often grab them and even at times find myself wearing them outside of the house.
