How To Cope With a Hangover

With Christmas fast approaching and celebrating the passing of third year assignments I have been known lately to get a bit wrapped up in the festive spirit shall we say. Whether it be a glass of gin and tonic that turns into three or going out for ‘a few’ cocktails with the girls, there have been days, I can’t lie, where I have woken up and regretted the previous nights actions. However, it is due to what has recently become a recurring action that I have become somewhat an expert in, let’s say, how best to get through the day after.

Step 1: Brush Your Teeth

This is a pretty basic hygiene step which should already be the first thing you do in the morning, but I thought I would include it anyway to stress how this simple step is a game changer, especially if you were incapable or forgot to do it the night before. Imagine, you wake up, your mouth is dry as the Sahara and you can still taste a mixture of tequila and sick; removing this vile taste is the first step in the road to recovery.

Step 2: Rehydrate

Again, another straightforward step but since drinking dehydrates the body of its fluids its very important to replenish this. However, I would recommend slowly sipping your glass instead of downing it, as this can actually make you feel worse.

Step 3: Shower

Even if you don’t feel like it and you have to have to make yourself physically crawl out of bed and to the shower, I promise that you will feel better afterwards. Stepping out of the shower, particularly after a rough morning, can make me feel like a brand new woman, as there is nothing better than that fresh clean shower feeling.

Step 4: Change Your Sheets

This is the last step in removing all traces from the night before and is very important following step 3 as what’s the point in climbing back into dirty sheets after showering? I am definitely that person that loves having fresh new crisp bedsheets on, so after a night of drinking and dancing this is something that I personally have to do before sleeping that night just for my piece of mind.

Step 5: Spending Time With Friends

In terms of passing the day I have found that I often feel worse if I am lying in bed by myself staring at the ceiling, so unless my head is throbbing, I prefer to spend time with my housemates. You can even catch up on funny stories of the night before, or simply watch a movie and all be hungover together, which is nice as you can all share the pain of the hangover together. Also, there is always someone who is feeling worse than I am which makes me feel better.

Step 6: Early Night

To avoid the two-day hangover, it is essential to sleep early and usually when I am feeling worse for wear I don’t want to stay up late anyway. Sleep is highly important in allowing you to wake up feeling fully refreshed so with the mixture of alcohol and staying up late the night before this stops you from having enough rest or a deep sleep, so if you want to feel fresh the next day make sure you get your eight to ten hours.
